A poetic fusion of Irish music, sea, and craft, this unique ornament transforms a real Galway Bay oyster shell into a miniature sailing boat—rich in meaning and coastal character.
The shell, collected from the wild Atlantic waters, forms the natural hull—its rich textures and organic shape preserved and enhanced with a clear protective finish. Rising from its centre, a mast of twisted copper wire work adds warmth and contrast, lending a sense of movement and character.
The sail has lines from the song “The Voyage,” written by Johnny Duhan and famously performed by Christy Moore.
At its heart, the lyric “Life is an ocean and love is a boat in troubled waters that keeps us afloat” is a metaphor for how we move through life:
- “Life is an ocean” suggests that life is vast, unpredictable, and sometimes overwhelming—full of calm moments, but also storms and uncertainty.
- “Love is a boat” presents love as something that carries and supports us through those conditions. It gives direction, stability, and safety.
- “In troubled waters that keeps us afloat” speaks to the idea that during difficult times—loss, hardship, doubt—it is love (whether romantic, family, or friendship) that prevents us from sinking.
Overall, the message is both simple and profound: no matter how rough life becomes, love is what sustains us and helps us endure. It’s one of the reasons the song resonates so deeply—it captures something universal in a very gentle, poetic way.
The sail is carefully tied to the mast with fine copper wire, adding a delicate, handcrafted detail that speaks to the care in every piece.
The entire piece rests on a smooth porcelain tile base, grounding the form and elevating its display—allowing the oyster’s natural beauty and the boat’s sculptural silhouette to be fully appreciated. The transparent adhesive connecting the oyster to its base reflects light like water, evoking the oceanic atmosphere. This clear bond creates the illusion that the shell remains embraced by the sea.
Each one is individually made, ensuring no two are ever alike. A meaningful Irish keepsake or gift, it captures the spirit of the sea, the power of song, and the enduring idea that love carries us through.
Please note that any embellishments/sculptural shapes may not perfectly match the colours or designs shown in the photographs. This is because each piece is handmade and unique. Each piece is individually made to order. Each shell passes through multiple stages of preparation and finishing to achieve a high-quality result. Please allow 4-10 days from the order date for your piece to be completed before it is dispatched.
These are wild, natural oyster shells gathered from the west coast of Ireland, and each one varies in size, shape, and natural markings. The average shell measures approximately 2″ × 3″, though some may be slightly shorter or taller, wider or narrower. As each piece is hand-decorated, the artwork will also vary, making every trinket dish truly unique. Any embellishments on the shell may change in design from time to time.
_____________
We believe that every shell has a tale to tell. Our oysters are from the west coast of Ireland, picked from the waters of the world-famous “Galway Bay” part of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
Shells are genuinely one-of-a-kind gifts because no two are alike. They are tumbled by the wild Atlantic Ocean waves and shaped by the changing seasons, resulting in varying sizes and shapes. We work with what nature has given us. Variations such as; growth marks, ragged edges, chipped backs, and barnacles make each one special.
Every shell is individually picked, cleaned, prepared, hand-painted and decorated by our artists at our studio in Galway, Ireland.
Whether you receive this as a gift or purchase it for yourself as a decoration, a memento of a trip, or for friends or family to mark an occasion or relationship, you are becoming part of this Oyster’s tale.
